I realized this six years ago, when I started to see that something was wrong with my marriage. I kept on going over what had gone wrong and how I had gotten to a place where I was living with so much pain and frustration. I’d spent months engaged in a daily mental game of analyzing, judging, and shaming myself was making me very unhappy. Sometimes you just have to hit rock bottom to see the light. One day, as I walked through Central Park, I decided I’d commit to only doing the things that made me happy. It sounded like a pretty good idea, but it was also very frightening because it meant making scary decisions, like leaving my marriage. Nonetheless, having that moment in nature gave me the clarity to see that the desire for happiness in my life was stronger than anything else. It allowed me to see through my fears and uncover what I needed. I needed to step out of that relationship, although I didn’t want all the difficulty and uncertainty that would result from leaving it. I started to invent strategies to muster up the courage to put this into action, the first one was to come up with a list of all the things I wanted in my life. Over the years, I’ve seen that sometimes, the business of life gets us into constantly doing, rather than being who we really are. When you step into the greatness of who you are, you choose to have what you want and need in order to share your gifts with others. In fact, the key to living a fulfilling life is to have a practice of checking into who we are being. If you don’t do it on a regular basis, it will sneak up on you as low energy, a feeling that something is off, arguments with people close to you, or needing an urgent vacation. This practice is about a moment of being in the now and allowing everything else to stop: all activity, responsibilities, to-do lists, judgments, deadlines stop. I had a sneak preview of this feeling last month during the yoga summer solstice event at Times Square. In one of the busiest intersections in the world, with traffic, noise, and tourists, I tapped into my inner silence. If you haven’t checked in with yourself lately, now is a great opportunity to look at who you are being, what obstacles you’re encountering, and who you want to be so that you can shine for the rest of the year. Being self-absorbed: Remember, social media is like a social gathering – no one wants to spend time with the bore who only talks about themselves or things that matter to them. Find ways to help others, answer their questions, comment on or share their posts. Make your page primarily about THEM; not YOU! 2. Talk too much: Again, no one likes a conversation hog. Sharing too much information all at once goes very quickly from interesting to irritating. Be selective. Think about what you would like to see show up in your social feed. Share accordingly. 3. Wildly erratic presence: Not being on your network for days and then bombarding your network with updates is no way to connect with people. Here are five top tips I’ve picked up over the years”.   1. Listen more than you talk We have two ears and one mouth, using them in proportion is not a bad idea! To be a good leader you have to be a great listener. Brilliant ideas can spring from the most unlikely places, so you should always keep your ears open for some shrewd advice. This can mean following online comments as closely as board meeting notes, or asking the frontline staff for their opinions as often as the CEOs.     Sometimes the route to happiness depends more on what you don’t do Happiness–in your business life and your personal life–is often a matter of subtraction, not addition Consider, for example, what happens when you stop doing the following 10 things: 1. Blaming. People make mistakes. Employees don’t meet your expectations. Vendors don’t deliver on time. So you blame them for your problems. But you’re also to blame. Maybe you didn’t provide enough training. Maybe you didn’t build in enough of a buffer. Maybe you asked too much, too soon. Taking responsibility when things go wrong instead of blaming others isn’t masochistic, it’s empowering–because then you focus on doing things better or smarter next time. And when you get better or smarter, you also get happier. 2. Impressing. No one likes you for your clothes, your car, your possessions, your title, or your accomplishments. Those are all “things.” People may like your things–but that doesn’t mean they like you. Sure, superficially they might seem to, but superficial is also insubstantial, and a relationship that is not based on substance is not a real relationship. Genuine relationships make you happier, and you’ll only form genuine relationships when you stop trying to impress and start trying to just be yourself. 3. Clinging. When you’re afraid or insecure, you hold on tightly to what you know, even if what you know isn’t particularly good for you. An absence of fear or insecurity isn’t happiness: It’s just an absence of fear or insecurity. Holding on to what you think you need won’t make you happier; letting go so you can reach for and try to earn what you want will. Even if you don’t succeed in earning what you want, the act of trying alone will make you feel better about yourself. 4. Interrupting. Interrupting isn’t just rude. When you interrupt someone, what you’re really saying is, “I’m not listening to you so I can understand what you’re saying; I’m listening to you so I can decide what I want to say.” Want people to like you? Listen to what they say. Focus on what they say. Ask questions to make sure you understand what they say. They’ll love you for it–and you’ll love how that makes you feel. 5. Whining. Your words have power, especially over you. Whining about your problems makes you feel worse, not better. If something is wrong, don’t waste time complaining. Put that effort into making the situation better. Unless you want to whine about it forever, eventually you’ll have to do that. So why waste time? Fix it now. Don’t talk about what’s wrong. Talk about how you’ll make things better, even if that conversation is only with yourself. And do the same with your friends or colleagues. Don’t just be the shoulder they cry on. Friends don’t let friends whine–friends help friends make their lives better. 6. Controlling. Yeah, you’re the boss. Yeah, you’re the titan of industry. Yeah, you’re the small tail that wags a huge dog. Still, the only thing you really control is you. If you find yourself trying hard to control other people, you’ve decided that you, your goals, your dreams, or even just your opinions are more important than theirs. An example of how a business can easily turn a negative customer experience into a positive:Without going into detail my husband and I returned to one of our favourite ‘eateries’ (lovely waterfront aspect) after a 2 months pause only to find that the normally excellent service and consistently good food was no longer in existence … or so it seemed. We left hungry, out of pocket and bitterly disappointed. We could have left it at that to never return again and, of course, tell our friends about the bad experience, who in turn would have also talked abut this place negatively to others. However, having spent a past life in hospitality management I decided to contact the manager thinking it was only fair for him to know about all that had transpired on that evening. Without awareness there can be no change. I have to say, to receive a response within 24 hours left me suitably impressed. Not only did we receive a phone call where it was obvious that the manager had taken the time to actually investigate every incident (and there were several … what could go wrong did go wrong!), he made no excuses but apologised profusely. He shared the results of his investigations and assured me that steps had been taken to ensure there would be no repetition. He hoped that we would give them another chance and return. He also asked for our address. The manager spent a good 30 minutes on the phone with me – I’m sure valuable time out of his busy day. A further pleasant surprised came in the form of a letter the next day. See attached I’m happy to say we did return and enjoyed a good meal. Some of the staff were obviously new and a little unsure of themselves, however, extremely friendly and helpful. My Fettuccini Marinara with prawns, muscles, scallops and bug meat was delicious. My husband’s smoked salmon Caesar salad was also good. To date we have not used the generous voucher received but still enjoyed a good night out and are glad that we did return.
